EMPAT

Our mission is to provide up-to-date, problem-based learning in the field of pediatric emergency medicine in a state of the art facility, and to exceed the expected role of an pediatric advanced practice provider.

Program Overview

two people working in a hospital roomThe Emergency Medicine Pediatric Advanced Practice Trainee Program, or EMPAT, is a 12-month post graduate training program involving Brown Emergency Medicine (BrownEM) faculty and pediatric APPs to support a comprehensive pediatric emergency medicine training program. 

The program utilizes Hasbro Children’s Hospital as the site for orientation, training, and clinical rotations for newly graduated or non-emergency medicine trained APPs. Hasbro Children’s Hospital is affiliated with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Brown University Health and is a teaching facility.

Katie Smith, FNP is the EMPAT program coordinator.  Dr. Frank Overly is the EMPAT lead physician. Dr. Laura Chapman is the Medical Director of the Pediatric APP Program and Ariana Africo, PA, is the EMPAT program co-director.

Program Content

During the development year, EMPATs receive the following training:

  • 5-10 hours of didactic conferences each week with Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellows and Emergency Medicine Residents. 
  • Hands-on training in various departments, working with appointed faculty. 
  • Procedure workshops and lectures provided by senior physicians and appointed faculty.

  • Radiology and Ultrasound Review 
  • Rotation with our Child Protection Team
  • Pediatric Psychiatry Rotation
  • Pediatric Surgery Rotation
  • Pediatric Orthopedic Rotation
  • Critical Care and Trauma Exposure
  • Medical Simulation Center
  • Pediatric Clinical Decision Unit

Trainings

  • EKG Interpretation
  • Pediatric Sedation
  • Silt Lamp
  • Suturing and I&D
  • GYN and ENT procedures
  • Lumbar punctures

Program Requirements

Acceptance into EMPAT requires:

  • Certificate from an accredited physician assistant or nurse practitioner 
  • Personal interview 
  • Current NCCPA certification or AANP certification
  • Rhode Island State licensure/eligible
  • A GPA of 3.1 or greater
