A Message from our Department Chair

Linda Brown, MD, MS
Chair, Emergency Medicine

I am so proud and thankful to lead such a dynamic, inclusive, and welcoming department. Brown Emergency Medicine faculty, fellows, residents and staff have a true passion for delivering the highest quality evidence-based care to all patients. We are dedicated to serving our communities locally, nationally, and internationally, and through our innovative education, quality improvement and research programs we aim to have a positive impact in Rhode Island and beyond.

Through our world-class residency program, we are training the clinicians, educators, researchers, and leaders of tomorrow. I am also reminded daily of the breadth of emergency medicine through our fellowships in pediatric emergency medicine, global health, ultrasound, EMS, injury protection, medical simulation, medical education, and healthcare administration.

Our values of excellence, equity, innovation, wellness, humanity, integrity, and diversity are reflected in our culture, and our commitment to Belonging, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is unwavering. I hope you have the opportunity to further explore our mission-based work here on this site, and I look forward to hearing from you with any questions you may have.

Linda Brown, MD, MSCE
Chair, Physician-in-Chief & President
Vice Chair, Pediatric Emergency Medicine
Associate Director of the Division of LMSC
Professor of Emergency Medicine
Professor of Pediatrics

About the Department

The Department of Emergency Medicine, established in 2005, has rapidly grown to over 120 academic emergency physicians in Brown Emergency Medicine (BEM) (Formerly UEMF). We care for over 250,000 patients annually at the following locations:

  • Rhode Island Hospital Anderson Emergency Center
  • Hasbro Children's Hospital Emergency Department
  • The Miriam Hospital Emergency Department
  • Newport Hospital Emergency Department

As you view our site and learn more about our department we invite you to communicate, collaborate, and engage with us to grow and develop academic emergency medicine at Brown and across Rhode Island.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to deliver high quality compassionate care and advance health equity through innovations in emergency medical care, education, and research in service to and in collaboration with our community.

Academic and Clinical Mission

The many divisions and programs in the department support the academic mission and provide outstanding training experiences for fellows, residents, and medical students. Experienced, well-funded academic faculty members lead divisions in EMS, injury prevention, global emergency medicine, medical simulation, ultrasound, and disaster medicine and emergency preparedness. Fellowships are currently offered or are planned in each of these divisions.

Programs in observation medicine, quality and patient safety, social emergency medicine, toxicology, stroke, foundry for arts and humanities, and wellness round out the department's efforts.

We hope you will enjoy viewing our website and learning more about the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Education and Research

The flagship of our educational program is the highly competitive, four-year Emergency Medicine Residency Program, which trains 14 residents per year. Established in 1992, our residency program has a long tradition of training leaders in emergency medicine with unsurpassed clinical training, an innovative curriculum, and an outstanding mix of advancement opportunities in research, education, global health, and community service.

The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, is home to world-class campus-based and hospital-based faculty, totaling more than 2,300 members -- 59 percent of all physicians in Rhode Island -- teaches in five basic science departments and 14 clinical departments. They teach medical students and residents in 27 residency programs in affiliated hospitals, among which Rhode Island Hospital, the school’s first clinical site, is the principal teaching affiliate. Training opportunities are amplified by a large network of Rhode Island physicians who serve as community-based clinical faculty.

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine section is the home of our Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship program, which trains two fellows each year in a three-year fellowship.

The department has a diverse and successful research enterprise with two basic science laboratories and a full infrastructure to support clinical research. We have four research faculty PhDs in the department who work collaboratively with our physicians in cutting-edge emergency medicine research.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine

The Pediatric Emergency Department (ED) at Hasbro Children’s Hospital is the only ED in the region dedicated to the emergent and urgent medical needs of children and adolescents, caring for children and adolescents from birth to age 18 and beyond. With more than 58,000 visits per year, the Hasbro ED provides a significant proportion of the emergency and pediatric referral care to families in Rhode Island and surrounding regions.

As the regional tertiary care children’s hospital and Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, the Hasbro Children's ED is staffed 24 hours a day by 28 board-certified pediatric emergency medicine physicians and pediatric emergency nurses with access to pediatric surgeons and other pediatric medical and surgical subspecialists.
