A Message from our Vice Chair of Education
The Brown EM Education team is committed to delivering exceptional medical education to the full spectrum of learners from undergraduates to faculty. This section is also a forum for trainees and faculty to collaborate on projects; identify and address educational gaps; design novel programs and interventions; and advance education through research and scholarship. We offer numerous opportunities to teach, serve, and lead through education.
Within The Warren Alpert Medical School, Brown EM has a large educational presence. We offer several faculty- and resident-led preclinical electives, a popular ED shadowing program, and an active EM Interest Group. We sponsor MS3 student EM and Pediatric EM electives and an MS4 Sub-internship, in addition to electives in ultrasound and toxicology. Over 60 EM physicians serve as mentors or small group leaders in Brown’s Doctoring course for MS1 and MS2 students. EM faculty members actively lead scholarly concentrations, the EM boot camp program, and a student career advising series.
Our flagship educational program is the Emergency Medicine residency. This highly competitive, four-year program is designed to provide state-of-the-art clinical and academic training to the future leaders of our specialty. The clinical training environment offers unparalleled experiences in emergency medicine with a high volume of critical care, trauma, and pediatrics. We provide structured experiences in toxicology, ultrasound, and emergency radiology along with the flexibility to pursue academic tracks and numerous clinical electives. Our academic conferences feature an innovative and comprehensive curriculum as well as nationally recognized guest speakers. Brown EM residency program graduates are among the most sought after in the country.
Brown EM also sponsors post-residency training through numerous fellowship programs. With a large and diverse faculty, Brown EM offers two ACGME fellowships—Pediatric EM and EMS; and six non-ACGME fellowships — Global Emergency Medicine, Injury Prevention, Leadership & Administration, Medical Education, Simulation, and Ultrasound. Most Brown EM fellowship programs include financial support to complete an advanced degree such as a Master of Public Health or other related degree.
Brown EM also provides an advanced training program for mid-level providers. The Emergency Medicine Physician Extender Development Program (EMPED) was one of the first programs of its kind and represents our commitment to inter-professional education.
Lastly, Brown EM provides ongoing educational programs and professional development for faculty on topics ranging from bedside teaching to research to procedural skills maintenance.
