Program Overview and Mission

The Rhode Island Injury Prevention Research Fellowship is a non-ACGME research fellowship grounded in the mission of training talented physician researchers who are driven to make meaningful advancements in injury control through collaborative research, implementation science, advocacy, and community-based partnerships. Fellows are graduates of emergency medicine or pediatric residency programs or pediatric emergency medicine fellowships and work clinically at the emergency departments affiliated with Brown University Health.

Sponsored by the Brown University Health Department of Emergency Medicine and the Rhode Island Injury Prevention Center, our one- or two-year research fellowship offers a rich array of research and clinical opportunities, robust interdepartmental collaboration, and mentorship in all key domains of Injury Prevention Research.

Upon completion of the fellowship, graduates will be prepared for an academic career with a dedicated focus on injury and violence research.

The fellowship offers a very competitive salary and benefits package.

Program Highlights

This customizable fellowship program allows for a traditional two-year track or an accelerated one-year track for select candidates with pre-existing advanced degrees or specific prior training.

Through ongoing diverse partnerships between Rhode Island Injury Prevention Center Faculty and local and national organizations, fellows are offered opportunities to participate in collaborative research, community outreach, academic conferences, and education at the state and national level.

The Injury Prevention Center of Rhode Island Hospital has a well-established research program, with a long track record of funding support from the NIH, CDC, state agencies, and private foundations. It also has strong community service and professional education programs. As part of their training, fellows will have the opportunity to work with a large group of physician-researchers, PhD researchers, masters-level clinical research staff, community program staff and the faculty of Brown University.

For more information about the Rhode Island Injury Prevention Center, click here.

Research methods learned through master’s-level course work will be applied to the
development and completion of an injury-related pilot study. Opportunities to participate
in ongoing research through the Rhode Island Injury Prevention Center and/or
submission of a grant application to support future research are available.

Fellows function as teaching attendings in Rhode Island’s only high-volume, Level-1 adult or pediatric trauma center or in local community hospitals working with residents of a renowned four-year training program, commensurate with prior residency training.

Mentorship is a core component in the development of clinical and research skills as well as career advancement. Fellows will be mentored by a core group of highly successful injury research faculty, with access to diverse topic-specific mentors throughout the Brown University Health system.

Fellows without an existing advanced degree are expected to complete a master’s degree in public health, biostatistics, or other approved program through Brown University. This degree will be supported with generous educational funding. Some example programs include:

  • Accelerated Master of Public for Clinicians
  • Traditional Master of Public Health
  • Master of Science in Biostatistics

Advanced training in education, including dissemination of injury-related education in academic, community, and media settings, will be provided. Fellows can build upon their education portfolio by providing lectures within the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Generous CME funds are offered annually.

Medical, dental, life, disability, medical liability, retirement plan, parental leave.

Fellows will have a Brown University Appointment.
