Pediatric Emergency Medicine
The Pediatric Emergency Department at Hasbro Children’s Hospital is the only ED in the region dedicated to the emergent and urgent medical needs of children and adolescents, caring for children and adolescents from birth to age 18 and beyond.

BPI is composed of six foundations -- Brown Dermatology, Brown Emergency Medicine, Brown Medicine, Brown Neurology, Brown Urology, and University Surgical Associates.

As of January 2024, 24 states have legalized cannabis for recreational purposes with five more pursuing legalization. Even more have legalized cannabis for medical use. This has led to an unforeseen and alarming consequence: an increase in unintentional ingestion of edible cannabis products (known as “edibles”) by children. At Hasbro Children’s Hospital alone, there has been an over 700% increase in emergency department visits for younger children with unintentional cannabis exposure since the passing of the state law and opening of the first recreational dispensary, with rates continuing to rise.

I think movies and media sometimes make us think that drowning is a big splashing event with a lot of noise but that is not the case," said Dr. Rebecca Wingerter, an emergency medicine pediatrician at Hasbro Children's Hospital. "We know from an abundance of data that when children drown it's largely quite and they go under and you don't necessarily know."

When Doctors Make Mistakes
A few minutes into the 2024 documentary A World of Hurt: How Medical Malpractice Fails Everyone, medical law expert Richard Boothman explains that patients sue doctors and hospitals for three main reasons. “First, just a simple search for answers; secondly, a very powerful [desire] that what happened to them not happen to someone else,” says Boothman, chief risk officer of the University of Michigan health system. “And thirdly, there is a yearning for accountability, validation for their injury.”
Unfortunately, the American medical malpractice system rarely provides any of these outcomes, according to A World of Hurt, which was produced by Brown Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine Mark Brady ’09 MMSc, ’09 MD and directed by medical students Alexander Homer ’21, ’25 MD, and Viknesh Kasthuri ’21, ’25 MD.
