Diversity

We embrace all types of diversity as strength and as part of our commitment to excellence in our mission areas of patient care, research, and education.

The Department of Emergency Medicine strives to create and maintain a provider population that mirrors the diverse patient population we serve in Rhode Island. We embrace all types of diversity as strength and as part of our commitment to excellence in our mission areas of patient care, research, and education. We believe that diverse faculty, residency and fellowship programs are essential to our long-term success as leaders in academic medicine. We seek to develop the academic careers of our faculty and trainees.

The Department of Emergency Medicine strongly encourages applications from those who are under-represented in our specialty, including women, racial and ethnic minorities, and LGBTQ candidates. Brown University does not discriminate or permit discrimination by any member of its community against any individual on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, parental status, marital status, age, disability, citizenship, or veteran status in matters of admissions, employment, housing, or services or in the educational programs or activities it operates.

Diversity Initiatives

In August of 2023 we are implementing a curriculum for all faculty and residents. Using anti-racist methodology, we will learn how our personal biases, institutions, and social structures contribute to inequitable health outcomes. In this longitudinal course our goal is to create a more equitable care environment for our patients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and explore biases within our medical practice and their effect on patient care.
  • Develop strategies to reduce the impact of our biases on clinical care.
  • Identify social determinants of health specific to our local community and available resources to address them.
  • Explore solutions to systemic inequities in our country and their influence on patient and societal outcomes.
  • Gain the knowledge and confidence to teach others and have conversations about the social determinants of health that affect our patients.

Our hospital is located in Providence, a majority-minority city and it largely consists of a population that is historically underrepresented in medicine. We have begun to participate in Pathway Programs through The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. By visiting high schools, hosting SIM days, and teaching procedural skills, we hope to inspire tomorrow’s physicians and become active members in our community.

Several times throughout the year, the residents who identify as people of color or are part of the LGBTQ+ community are given protected time to get together, eat, share stories, and just have fun. Periodically, faculty from diverse backgrounds are also invited. We have found that providing this space is important not only for wellness but also for the betterment of our residency as a whole.

We offer a $2,500 scholarship for fourth-year medical students who are historically underrepresented in medicine to participate in our ED sub-internship. You will work alongside and learn from residents and faculty in our buys emergency department, receive mentorship, and learn all about Brown EM and how you could fit in here. For more information, visit the Office of Belonging, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion website.

Diversity Visiting Student Scholarship

Diversity in Medicine Scholarship

We are excited to offer the Brown Emergency Medicine Visiting Clerkship Program to qualified students from underrepresented groups in medicine. The program is co-sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University through the Diversity in Medicine Visiting Student Scholarship.

A fourth-year medical student from an underrepresented group in medicine, who is in good academic standing at a US accredited medical school is the ideal applicant. Students must have completed all core clerkships at their home institution. We encourage students to apply to rotate for one 4-week block between July and October of their fourth year. During their time here, students will have dedicated and individualized mentorship focused on leadership and career development. The Brown Emergency Medicine Visiting Clerkship Program offers a stipend of $2,500 to cover travel costs and living expenses during the clerkship month. Interested students should send us an email.
