Artificial Intelligence and Innovation (AIAI) Fellowship

Empowering emergency physicians to lead responsible AI Innovation in emergency and acute care.

The Artificial Intelligence & Innovation in Emergency Medicine Fellowship is a clinically embedded, non-ACGME fellowship designed for Emergency Medicine physicians interested in advancing the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Built within the high-variability, throughput-sensitive, and data-rich environment of Emergency Medicine, the fellowship provides opportunities to apply AI in ways that can create meaningful clinical and operational impact. Through a combination of structured coursework, hands-on projects, operational leadership experience, and scholarly work, fellows develop the skills needed to lead AI-enabled transformation across healthcare organizations.

Fellowship Tracks

The certificate-based fellowship encompasses shared didactic core, applied deployment, governance, agent building, and scholarship. This is a 12-month program with exposure to leading external professional education. The primary focus for the certificate track is applied operational deployment, governance fundamentals, and scholarly output.

Year 1 mirrors the core and year 2 adds deeper clinical Al, entrepreneurship, division innovation/administration, capstone work, and a named divisional leadership role. Degree pathway: Brown Online Sc.M. in Data Science: Policy, Governance & Society. During year 2, fellows serve as near-peer instructors for new fellows and contribute to residency didactics, while completing a higher-complexity capstone or thesis aligned to the Master's program.

All fellows complete a comprehensive core curriculum focused on the practical application of AI in healthcare.

Curriculum Topics Include:

  • Foundations of Data in Emergency Medicine
  • Foundational Programming and Data Analytics Skills
  • AI and Machine Learning Fundamentals for Clinicians
  • Clinical Decision Support and Informatics
  • Operations Analytics
  • Quality and Safety for AI Deployments
  • Responsible AI and Governance
  • Implementation and Change Management
  • Health System Finance and ROI Analysis for AI Initiatives

Fellows gain hands-on experience developing, evaluating, and implementing AI-enabled solutions within clinical and operational environments. A dedicated curriculum in AI agent design and development allows fellows to build and assess intelligent systems for clinical documentation support, operational decision-making, workflow automation, and other healthcare applications while adhering to rigorous safety, governance, and ethical standards.

Upon completion of the fellowship, graduates will be equipped to lead AI initiatives across healthcare organizations, bridging the gap between emerging technology, clinical practice, operational excellence, and patient-centered care.

How To Apply

EM residency graduates with a commitment to Artificial Intelligence and Innovation will be considered. Application materials include a cover letter and 3 letters of recommendation (1 from Program Director). Start date is July 1, 2027. Cohort is 1-2 fellows/year.
