Program Overview
Vision: Create a rigorous and sustainable fellowship program that will attract top emergency medicine residency graduates and develop them into national and global leaders in Climate Change, Sustainability, and Environmental Medicine.
Mission: Prepare fellows for successful careers in Climate Change, Sustainability, and Environmental Medicine by providing training, mentorship, and practice opportunities within climate change, health care sustainability, and environmental medicine through the domains of clinical care, research, education, and community engagement.
Overview: The Climate Change, Sustainability, and Environmental Medicine Fellowship within the Department of Emergency Medicine at Brown University Health and affiliated with the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University provides advanced training on the impacts of a changing planet on our patients and health systems. Fellows will engage in a rigorous two-year curriculum during which they will complete an advanced degree (Master’s of Public Health, Diploma in Climate Change, or Fellowship of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine) while providing clinical care at sites within Brown University Health.
The fellowship program focuses on the following domains: (1) clinical care, (2) research, (3) education, and (4) community engagement. Within this framework, fellows will conduct scholarly work to investigate and mitigate the negative impacts of climate change on individuals and communities. Furthermore, fellows will develop an understanding of the environmental impact of health systems and craft innovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions, waste production, and environmental degradation.
The Climate Change, Sustainability, and Environmental Medicine Fellowship was designed to provide fellows with the necessary training to directly impact clinical practice, health systems, and public health within Rhode Island and the New England Region. The fellowship program aims to connect fellows with community partners with a solutions-oriented framework.
A unique component of the Climate Change, Sustainability, and Environmental Medicine Fellowship is that it includes opportunities for candidates interested in wilderness medicine who might also have an interest in climate change and sustainability. Fellows can design a curriculum that allows for wilderness excursions and advanced training alongside scholarly opportunities in environmental medicine.
Graduates from the fellowship will be national and global leaders in climate change, sustainability, and environmental medicine. They will provide evidence-based guidance on clinical practice, conduct innovative research, create new educational offerings, and team with community partners to enact impactful change.
